Welcome Message
On November 11th the people of Western North Carolina and across this great nation come together to observe Veterans Day and honor the dedication, self sacrifice and service of our nation's servicemen and servicewomen both past and present. Yet, it's important to recognize that remembering those who fought before is not enough. We must work together to guarantee opportunities for our thousands of active service personnel and those in future generations who will answer the call to serve.
I was happy to announce that the deadline for stop-loss pay for active service men and women has been extended until December 3, 2010. Stop-loss pay is the additional compensation for which service members and veterans are eligible, if they received orders to remain on active duty after their planned separation or retirement date during the period of September 11, 2001 through September 30, 2008. It is imperative that we keep our commitment to our military families.
Though we celebrate our national holiday on the 11th, it is important that as a society we make every day Veterans Day. We owe our veterans a debt of thanks can never be fully repaid. As our families gather together later this month to give thanks, I hope we all keep in mind our brave service members who often must be away from families during the holidays.
Sincerely,
