Calls on administration to “forcefully implement” Iran sanctions

Washington, DC - U.S. Congressman Mike Pence, Chairman of the House Republican and member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement on the signing of the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act of 2010 into law. Congressman Pence was a member of the Iran sanctions conference committee that produced the final version of the legislation President Obama will sign today:

“I welcome the enactment of the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act. If fully implemented, this legislation can become the impetus for ending the nuclear ambitions of the oppressive regime in Tehran.

“For years, Iran has been among the world’s foremost state sponsors of terror and the threat is growing worse by the day.

“The legislation President Obama signs today offers the kind of crippling sanctions that the United States can use to economically and diplomatically isolate Iran.

“Now, it is essential that the president carry out Congressional intent and forcefully implement these sanctions on Iran’s energy and financial sectors. The waivers included in the legislation must not be used to ignore the will of the American people and their elected representatives in Congress.

“This administration now has the tools to turn back the Iranian regime, but it is up to President Obama to use them.”
