Pence: Unemployment Report Shows Administration’s Economic Policies Are Not Working

SEPTEMBER 4, 2009

"The American people know that true economic recovery starts with fiscal discipline in Washington, and tax relief for working families, small businesses and family farms"

Washington, DC - U.S. Congressman Mike Pence, Chairman of the House Republican Conference, issued the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the national unemployment rate reached 9.7 percent in August:

"President Obama's assured us that our nation's unemployment rate would peak below 8% if Congress passed his ‘stimulus' package.  And Vice President Biden even said as recently as yesterday that, ‘The Recovery Act has played a significant role in changing the trajectory of our economy.'

"Yet today's report shows unemployment at a 26 year high and still rising.  The fact is, American families are hurting as our economy continues to shed jobs.  Unfortunately Hoosiers are experiencing this firsthand with the announcement last week of a Whirlpool plant in Evansville closing and 1,000 more jobs going along with it.

"The American people know that true economic recovery starts with fiscal discipline in Washington, and tax relief for working families, small businesses and family farms. With Congress set to reconvene next week, it is time for Democrats in Washington to put aside their failed economic agenda and work in a bipartisan manner to advance policies that will get the American people back to work."
