WASHINGTON, DC (October 7, 2010) – Rep. Gus Bilirakis (FL-09) was recognized today with an “A in English” award by U.S. English, Inc. for his dedication to preserving the unifying role of the English language in the U.S.
“Rep. Bilirakis has been a strong supporter for official English policies during his time in Congress,” said Mauro E. Mujica, chairman of the board of U.S. English. “At a time when there is renewed interest toward preserving what unites us as a nation, we are grateful to Rep. Bilirakis for his dedicated and enthusiastic support of this issue.”
Members received “A in English” honors based on their votes for several key issues, such as the English Language Unity Act, which declares English as the official language of the U.S. and establishes a uniform English language rule for naturalization.
A recent poll from Rasmussen Reports finds that 87 percent of Americans favor making English the official language of the U.S. Thirty states have some form of official English language law.
