Westmoreland Supports Adoption of Earmark Ban by House Republican Conference, Looks for More Ways to Cut Federal Spending

November 18, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House Republican Conference voted today to renew their ban on earmarks in the 112th Congress.  This will affect 2012 and 2013 appropriations bills and any other spending bills passed during the 112th Congress.  Below is Congressman Westmoreland’s (GA-03) statement on the ban.

“With our vote to once again ban earmarks in the 112th Congress, House Republicans have taken steps towards fulfilling our promise to cut federal spending and get serious about paying off the national debt.  Although earmarks may sometimes serve as a helpful tool to secure funds for beneficial projects, they too often also allow for corruption and wasteful spending.  With our vote today, House Republicans are letting the American people know we too are sick and tired of the over-the-top spending in DC and that we are ready make some hard decisions to cut federal spending.

“I’m also pleased Senate Republicans have joined House Republicans by passing their own ban on earmarks.  Having both chambers united on this issue – even though it is only Republican members – shows a real promise for possible reform.  I encourage my Democrat counterparts in the House and the Senate to pass their own ban on earmarks.  Although there is still much to do in order to truly get spending back to sustainable levels, this earmark ban is a small step towards fixing the financial situation we are facing and is a move in the right direction,” stated Westmoreland.
