Congressman Burton Commemorates
Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

December 7, 2010

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Dan Burton (R-IN-05) issued the following statement to commemorate the 69th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor:

“Today we honor the thousands of innocent lives that were lost at Pearl Harbor on that ‘date which will live in infamy’, December 7, 1941.  We also take the time to honor those who survived that horrific attack which started our war with Japan in World War II.

“President Abraham Lincoln, after the Battle of Gettysburg, said ‘…we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow -- this ground.  The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.’  His words, so appropriate for that battlefield, serve as a strong reminder that those who fought and died at Pearl Harbor continue to show us the meaning of the sacrifices that are made for freedom.  We must never forget those sacrifices which were made in World War II or in other wars, including the fight against terrorism which is being waged right now in Afghanistan and in Iraq.

“We continue to honor and salute all of the brave men and women who have always served our country.”
