Republicans Spearhead Congressional Resolution Marking National Charter Schools Week
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. John Kline (R-MN), the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee’s senior Republican member, issued the following statement today in honor of the nation’s charter schools and in support of H. Res. 1149, designating the week of May 2, 2010, as National Charter Schools Week:
“I am proud to join teachers, parents, and students from around the country to honor our nation’s charter schools. Nearly five thousand charter schools are educating almost 1.5 million students and offering valuable insight to policymakers in our efforts to promote academic achievement. The idea behind charter schools was born in my home state of Minnesota, and the fact that 39 other states have adopted similar programs is a testament to the success of this innovative education model.
“Charter schools enjoy a unique degree of freedom, but with that freedom comes a great deal of public responsibility. The nation’s charter schools are held to a higher standard of accountability for student achievement, and they offer a greater degree of educational choice and competition for parents and communities. Their success is all the more impressive when considering the unique challenges many charter schools face.
“I strongly support H. Res. 1149, a resolution that sets aside this week to honor charter schools. I hope this resolution will serve as a starting point for renewed federal efforts in support of charter schools and generate continued engagement with our partners at the state and local levels to encourage their growth and success. Every child deserves the caliber of education high-performing charter schools provide, which is why these schools deserve our support.”
NOTE: H. Res. 1149, introduced by Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT), “acknowledges and commends charter schools and their students, parents, teachers, and administrators across the United States for their ongoing contributions to education and improving and strengthening our public school system.”
