Washington, Jun 19 - Iowa Congressman Tom Latham was pleased to congratulate Gilbert High School student Beth Lynch on Monday for her winning entry in the Congressional Art Competition for Iowa’s 4th District.

Lynch, who will be a senior next year, entered into the contest a work titled “Legacies of Our Past,” a mixed media piece that includes pencil, charcoal and scratchboard elements.  The work depicts some of the world’s greatest architectural landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal, the Parthenon and the Empire State Building.  The piece will be put on display in the U.S. Capitol for a year, along with winning entries from congressional districts across the country.

Congressman Latham met with and personally congratulated Lynch and her mother during a meeting on Capitol Hill on Monday.

“Beth is a wonderful example of the abundance of talented young artists in Iowa,” Congressman Latham said.  “The Congressional Art Competition helps foster that talent and inspires creativity in our students while encouraging them to follow their dreams. Beth should be proud of what she’s accomplished, and I wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”

Lynch said a drawing class her sophomore year nurtured her interest in art.

“Art classes are one of my favorite parts of my schedule at school, mainly because of the creative freedom there that isn’t always available in other classes,” she wrote in the materials submitted with her artwork.

The Congressional Art Competition is a yearly national competition designed to showcase original artwork created by America's high school students. The annual competition began in 1982 to give students throughout the United States the chance to have their talents recognized nationwide. High school art teachers, school administrators and principals are encouraged to work with creative students to help them enter the competition.
