Veterans COLA Bill Clears Senate
On Tuesday, November 13, the Senate passed a bill that would provide a 1.7% cost-of-living increase in benefits for disabled veterans and survivors, effective December 1. The bill now awaits the signature of President Barack Obama.
IOM Agent Orange Update 2012 to
Hold Public Session November 27 in
New Orleans
The Institute of Medicine’s Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 2012 committee will hold its third public session on November 27, in New Orleans. The location of the meeting, which begins at 9:00 am, is the Hotel Monteleone, Royal Salon D, 214 Royal Street.
Interested parties are invited to attend the public session as observers or to address the committee about issues related to health effects in veterans associated with the herbicides sprayed during the Vietnam War. A report from this committee will be provided to the Department of Veterans Affairs to help advise officials on policy decisions regarding compensation to veterans for service-related illnesses.
There has been much news coverage, including many editorials, about for-profit colleges since the Senate HELP Committee report that was released late July. The report from the two-year Committee investigation draws on data and documents not previously released, including new student outcome data for each of the companies reviewed. For-profit college trade association APSCU issued a statement in response to the report, and it is here. Some of the editorials appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, the Chicago Sun Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Oregonian, The Star Ledger (NJ), the Pittsburg Post-Gazette, The Florida Times Union and many more. Boston Vets Launch Military Social Network
Two Harvard Business school graduates and veterans, Aaron Kletzing and Yinon Weiss, have created a new social network for service members called RallyPoint.
