The Institute of Medicine’s Veterans and Agent Orange: Update 2012 committee will hold its third public session on November 27, in New Orleans. The location of the meeting, which begins at 9:00 am, is the Hotel Monteleone, Royal Salon D, 214 Royal Street.

Interested parties are invited to attend the public session as observers or to address the committee about issues related to health effects in veterans associated with the herbicides sprayed during the Vietnam War. A report from this committee will be provided to the Department of Veterans Affairs to help advise officials on policy decisions regarding compensation to veterans for service-related illnesses.

If you would like to attend this public session, with or without making a statement, contact Tia Carter at 202-334-3816 or by email at tcarter@nas.edu. Additional information about the upcoming meeting is available at http://www.iom.edu/Activities/Veterans/AgentOrangeNinthUpdate/2012-NOV-27.aspx

There has been much news coverage, including many editorials, about for-profit colleges since the Senate HELP Committee report that was released late July. The report from the two-year Committee investigation draws on data and documents not previously released, including new student outcome data for each of the companies reviewed. For-profit college trade association APSCU issued a statement in response to the report, and it is here. Some of the editorials appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, the Chicago Sun Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Oregonian, The Star Ledger (NJ), the Pittsburg Post-Gazette, The Florida Times Union and many more.  Doonesbury even dedicated a week’s worth of strips to the report. The strips began August 6 and ran for the week. They can be found here.

VetJobs is now averaging over 60,000 real jobs per day, with over 300,000 visitors a month, who use the site as a resource for guidance on conducting a job search and preparing for the interview; for career advice; for referrals to other appropriate career sites and military-related job fairs; and most of all, to identify thousands of military-friendly employers.

VetJobs, which has been endorsed by more veteran service organizations than any other site, has been very successful in getting jobs for our veterans and their family members. Ted Daywalt, CEO of VetJobs, is a VVA member and member of VVA’s Economic Opportunities Committee.
