Demands U.S. Postal Service Provide Information to Inspector General for Review

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan (PA-07) today called on the United States Postal Service (USPS) to reconsider consolidation plans for the Southeastern Processing and Distribution Center in Wayne, until a proper review has been completed.

Earlier this year, the USPS announced plans to consolidate 140 Processing and Distribution Centers across the country, including the Southeastern facility. The USPS recently announced that this facility and 47 others will begin consolidation in August. Upon first learning of the consolidation plans, Meehan called for a review of this decision by the U.S. Postal Service Inspector General. The review, however, has not been completed due to the limited information that the Inspector General has received from the Postal Service.

“I am concerned with the utter lack of transparency in the decision-making process,” Meehan stated in a letter to USPS Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe.  “The Southeastern Processing and Distribution Center has consistently been ranked among the top ten most efficient mail processing centers in the country. Key questions about this consolidation remain unanswered. I expect open and transparent communication with the Inspector General’s office so that the review may be completed prior to the August consolidation date.”
