TRI-CITY RECORD: Don’t Forget: August is Immunization Awareness Month

Washington, DC, Aug 23 - By Rep. Fred Upton -

For many Michigan families, the end of August not only means a few more weeks of summer heat but also the beginning of another school year.  For parents with children just entering school or daycare, or for older children heading off to college, that means making sure vaccination records are complete and up to date.

Immunizations are not just for kids and college students – we all need shots to ward off serious infectious diseases and illnesses like tetanus, measles, diphtheria, rubella, and the flu.  Sadly, many people in the United States still die every year because of diseases that are vaccine-preventable.

To raise public awareness of this important issue, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has again declared the month of August National Immunization Awareness Month.  It is a simple reminder of what you can do to protect yourself and help keep your community healthy.

Prevention is our most powerful tool in combating disease and infection.  Do not take an unnecessary risk by waiting. Taking part in the fight against disease is as easy as talking to your doctor or nurse about what immunizations are best for you and your loved ones.  Also, be sure to ask for a copy of screening and immunization records for your personal records.

For more information concerning National Immunization Awareness Month, recommended immunization schedules, and other vaccine resources, visit the CDC’s website at www.cdc.gov/vaccines or call (800) 232-4636.

As the old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  Do your part to protect yourself and your loved ones.
