Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) voted to increase funding for Amtrak by $214 million as part of the Transportation-Treasury-HUD Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2007. The amendment and the bill passed with strong support, and will next be considered by the Senate.
"Amtrak is an important part of Southwestern and Southern Illinois' transportation infrastructure," said Costello, a senior member of the Railroad Subcommittee. "With gas prices remaining high, it makes sense to strengthen our national rail network. Instead, it faces cuts each year in the President's budget. I will continue to work to keep Amtrak serving our area."
Also yesterday, Costello sent a letter to Acting Amtrak President and CEO David Hughes regarding naming the additional Carbondale to Chicago line "Saluki" to honor Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). Costello has worked closely with SIUC President Glenn Poshard on Amtrak funding, as the train is a critical resource for students, particularly those from the Chicago area. The state of Illinois passed funding for the new line this spring.
