COSTELLO URGES PRESIDENT BUSH TO DECLARE ILLINOIS COUNTIES
A FEDERAL DISASTER AREA

Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) has contacted President Bush urging him to expedite Governor Blagojevich's request that six counties in Illinois, including Randolph, be declared Federal disaster areas.  The counties endured several powerful tornadoes and thunderstorms on March 11th, 12th and 13th, 2006.

"The Federal government can help the recovery effort and that is important for the people that have been affected by these storms," said Costello.  "The damage to our communities also affects the regional economy.  This declaration by the President can minimize the damage."

If declared federal disaster areas, cash grants would be available to individuals and households to help with temporary housing, home repairs and replacement, medical, dental, and other disaster-related costs.  In addition, low-interest loans would be available through the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Farm Service Agency.  Assistance would also be available to local and state governments for extraordinary costs for response and recovery due to the storms.
