Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the House of Representatives has approved funding for water projects in the 12th Congressional District as part of the Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill for fiscal year 2007.  The legislation will next be considered by the Senate.

"These projects will help protect our communities while restoring habitats and improving our infrastructure," said Costello.  "This is critical work for the economy of our region and I will work to ensure that this funding stays in the final version of the bill."

The projects include:

  • Kaskaskia Navigation System   - $2.019 million for operation and maintenance.
  • Lock 27 - $3.4 million for maintenance.
  • Wood River Levee, Madison County - $250,000 for construction.
  • Mississippi River - $8.56 million for maintenance, including $1 million for sediment removal near Grand Tower.
  • Chain of Rocks canal - $6.8 million for levee work.

In addition, fossil energy research and development programs received $558 million, including $54 million for FutureGen and $36.4 million for the Clean Coal Power Initiative.
