Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello (D-IL) announced today that the Illinois Department of Transportation has received three grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation that will benefit the 12th Congressional District. The grants total $75,000 and will be used to aid the development and management of the Great River Road along the Mississippi River and the Historic National Road along I-70.
Particular attention will be paid to working with local and state tourism agencies to market these attractions. The designated roads are located in Alexander, Jackson, Madison, Randolph, St. Clair and Union Counties.
“With the natural beauty found in our region, we must continue to encourage tourism as a means of economic development,” said Costello. “From the Mississippi River and the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial to the Shawnee National Forest, there are many great reasons to visit Southwestern and Southern Illinois.”
