Rep. Roybal-Allard Urges Students to Keep Fighting for DREAM Act Passage
Downtown Los Angeles,
Mar 22, 2011 -
Despite recent setbacks, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard urged members of the United Students of the Southeast Cities (USSC) to keep up pressure on Members of Congress and U.S. Senators to pass the American Dream Act.
Following the December 8, 2010 passage of the DREAM Act in the U.S. House of Representatives, Senate Democrats came up short on December 18 in their bid to pass the legislation, denying countless undocumented young people the chance to participate in our democracy and give back to our communities.
The USSC is based in the City of Maywood in the 34th District and is dedicated to politically mobilizing area youth to gain support in the community and on all levels of government for passage of the DREAM Act.
The legislation, which the congresswoman co-authored along with Congressman Howard Berman (CA-28) and Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart (FL-21, R), provides a path to legal immigration status for college-bound children who have lived most of their lives in this country, but do not have legal immigration status. Under the American Dream Act, qualified students would be eligible for temporary legal immigration status upon high school graduation that would lead to permanent legal residency if they go to college or serve in the military. The American Dream Act would also eliminate a federal provision that discourages states from providing in-state college tuition to immigrant students who have long resided in their states.
