Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) Announces House Passage of $20 million Authorization for Los Angeles River Revitalization Projects

Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-34) applauded today’s (April 19) passage of a historic $20 million authorization for restoration and revitalization projects along the Los Angeles River. This authorization, included in the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA), passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 394 to 25.
"For years, I have worked with my Los Angeles colleagues to revitalize the LA River, and our efforts have secured more than $3 million for studies of promising projects at sites along the River," Congresswoman Roybal-Allard said. "Now, with the authorization of the LA River projects, the Army Corps of Engineers can begin to break ground on revitalization activities."
The $20 million authorization marks a significant federal commitment to transforming the LA River from an unsightly concrete flood control channel into green space that will promote badly needed recreation, housing and job creation. The authorization will enable the Army Corps of Engineers to develop a plan to improve water quality, restore historic habitats, and enhance flood protection.
"It is important to recognize the hard work of the many local elected officials and stakeholders who helped to make this authorization for the LA River a reality, including Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilman Ed Reyes, Supervisor Gloria Molina, Friends of the Los Angeles River, and other interested organizations," Congresswoman Roybal-Allard said.
"Earlier this year, Mayor Villaraigosa challenged Congress to bring home federal dollars for the Los Angeles River, and I am pleased to say that this House authorization of $20 million for the river will go a long way toward accomplishing that goal," Congresswoman Roybal-Allard said. "I look forward to continued collaboration between the City, County, and all Angelenos who stand to benefit from a Los Angeles River that is safe, clean, and green."
The Senate bill, which contained a $12 million authorization and passed out of Committee on March 29, 2007, has yet to be considered on the Senate floor. Following passage in the Senate, the differences between the House and Senate bills must be reconciled before the measure can go to the President for his signature. Enactment of the authorization legislation allows Congress to consider annual appropriations for the LA River revitalization effort.
