Veterans Day Message
Message by Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates, Washington, DC, Monday, November 08, 2010

Veterans Day serves as a time for us to remember and thank those brave men and women who served our nation so honorably in the past and those who proudly wear the uniform today.

The hundreds of thousands of brave Americans courageously serving in harm’s way face a malicious enemy abroad, while their families faithfully await their safe return at home.  I know I’m joined by the American people in thanking you for your continued sacrifice and dedication to this country.

And yet saying thanks is not enough; President Kennedy, himself a Veteran, said that, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”

This Department’s commitment to providing our warriors past and present with the compensation, care, and support you deserve will never waver.  But it is also the duty of all Americans to properly recognize your service and sacrifice, as well as that of your families.

To the Veterans of the Armed Forces, we honor your valor and your exemplary service.  To current servicemen and women who uphold their legacy, we thank you for your tireless commitment to America’s security.
