  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Rep. Sutton Announces $440,954 Grant to Akron Children's Hospital Medical Center

Washington, DC - Today, Rep. Betty Sutton (D-OH) announced that the Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron has been awarded a $440,954 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services. This funding was awarded as part of the Children's Hospitals Graduate Medical Education Program. This funding will be used to hire a total of 10 full-time mental health specialists who will intervene, diagnose and immediately initiate treatment to prevent the downstream effects from the psychological and physiological trauma of abuse.

"This funding is critical to support children who are victims of abuse and neglect, and it will also create much-needed jobs in our community," Rep. Sutton said.

Studies show that children who experience abuse have a high incidence of problems with childhood success in academic performance, and development of socialization and communication skills, said Dr. R. Daryl Steiner, Director of the Care Center at Akron Children's Hospital. These challenges lead to high-risk, adolescent behavior, including drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, depression, and suicide attempts and successes. Furthermore, high-risk behaviors often carry over to adulthood.

"I would like to thank Congresswoman Sutton for her work, because we are thrilled to have received this funding," Steiner said. "It's hard to get programs like this started because money is scarce, but now that we have the money to get started, hopefully it will allow us to sustain the program beyond the two-year funding period."

Steiner said that the Children's Hospital will work hard to sustain the program through fee for service reimbursement after the two-year funding period has elapsed.
