  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

    Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

    Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

    The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Rep. Sutton Joins House Colleagues in Calling for China to End Currency Manipulation

Washington, DC - In response to China's continually shifting currency policy, Reps. Betty Sutton (D-Ohio), Tim Murphy (R-PA), Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) and Jason Altmire (D-PA) rallied today calling for China to immediately end its practice of currency manipulation and to make it clear that unfair and illegal practices will not be tolerated. The Representatives were joined by a coalition of labor and business leaders who have been affected by unfair trade tactics and currency manipulation.

"This isn't about being pro-trade or anti-trade; this is about the rules of trade and making sure that they are fair and enforced," said Rep. Sutton. "In my Congressional district, thousands of jobs have been lost as a result of China's currency manipulation and other illegal subsidies and unfair trade barriers. Our workers can compete with anyone on a level playing field, but we will not stand idly by and watch workers continue to lose their jobs and families continue to suffer because of these unfair trade practices."

The bipartisan Currency Reform Fair Trade Act (H.R. 2378) which Rep. Sutton is originally co-sponsoring would protect U.S. industries and manufacturers from foreign currency misalignment. By illegally subsidizing its exports through the undervaluation of its currency by 30 percent or more, China has distorted their gains from trade, created barriers to free and fair trade, harmed U.S. industries, and destroyed millions of U.S. jobs.

H.R. 2378 includes the following primary features:

* Neutralizes the negative effects of misaligned foreign currency by allowing injured American industries and workers to seek remedies under current trade laws;

* Uses publicly available data and methodologies to determine the misalignment in a transparent way;

* Applies a fair and predictable standard for currency misalignment; and

* Creates an incentive for foreign governments to cease unfair mercantilist trade practices and a deterrent against similar abuses in the future.

The bill is currently before the Committee on Ways and Means.
