  • The 13th Congressional District & Map

    Ohio's 13th Congressional District truly is a great place to live, raise a family and do business. Congresswoman Sutton has lived most of her life in and around the communities that make up much of the district, and she is proud to represent the people and places she knows and loves so much.

    Originally nicknamed the “Turnpike District”, the 13th Congressional District’s unique shape traces across the shoreline of Lake Erie in Lorain County, captures the “Emerald Necklace” of the Cleveland MetroParks and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and extends south to include the Portage Lakes State Park in Summit County. The 13th Congressional District is also home to institutions of higher learning such as Lorain County Community College and The University of Akron.

    The 13th Congressional District stretches across four of Northeast Ohio’s most populous counties, Lorain, Cuyahoga, Medina, and Summit, and it includes all or some of over thirty communities.

Sutton Hails Largest Increase in Veterans' Health Care in History

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Betty Sutton welcomed the President's release today of $3.7 billion in funding that Congress authorized last year. With the release of these funds, the 110th Congress has provided an extra $6.7 billion over last year for the largest single funding increase in the 77-year history of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Congresswoman Sutton strongly supported this funding increase and has repeatedly spoken out to ensure veterans receive the health care benefits they need.

"While in Iraq last October I met some of the brave men and women from Ohio serving our country. There are over 1 million veterans living in the state of Ohio. Ensuring that they receive quality care and services has been, and will continue to be, one of my top priorities. With this important investment in our veterans, we are beginning to fulfill our pledge to not only recognize and honor our veterans, but to ensure that they have access to the resources they need and the benefits they deserve."

"Americans were shocked and saddened to learn one year ago of the horrific conditions at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the neglect of our soldiers returning from admirably serving their country in Iraq and Afghanistan. I have said that we can, and that we must, do better by our veterans. This historic funding increase, along with the Wounded Warriors Act reforms, puts us on the right track to guaranteeing that the needs of America's veterans are met. I am glad that after initially resisting, the President has finally agreed to this momentous funding increase for our nation's veterans."

The release of this funding will:

  • Strengthen quality health care for 5.8 million patients, including about 263,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans;
  • Invest in much-needed maintenance for VA health care facilities and treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury for returning veterans;
  • Reduce the backlog of veterans (400,000 claims) waiting for their earned benefits by adding 1,800 claims processors;
  • Build on the first steps by this Congress at the beginning of 2007 -- Increasing veterans' health care and benefits by $5.2 billion for improved care and shorter waiting lines for veterans waiting 177 days to receive their earned benefits.

This funding increase won widespread support and praise from America's leading veterans' organizations including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Military Officers Association of America, Paralyzed Veterans of America, AmVets, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, National Association for Uniformed Services and the Disabled American Veterans.
