INDIANOLA STUDENT NOMINATED BY LATHAM OFFERED APPOINTMENT TO NAVAL ACADEMY

Iowa Congressman Tom Latham announced today that an Indianola student has been offered an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Brandon Aldred, a senior at Indianola High School, was sent an offer of appointment to attend the Academy as a member of the Class of 2017.
Congressman Latham nominated Aldred to the U.S. service academies after his office worked with Aldred on the application process. Latham phoned Aldred Monday in regards to the offer of appointment to the Naval Academy.
“I was deeply proud to recommend Brandon for an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, and I am excited for the opportunities that await him,” Congressman Latham said. “Brandon’s dedication to his studies, his school, and the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps has prepared him well for the Naval Academy’s rigorous standards and enriching challenges. I offer him my congratulations and wish him the best of success.”
Aldred is one of the top students in his class at Indianola and has participated in athletics, band, a variety of service and volunteer activities, and the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, a United States Navy organization designed to introduce youth to naval life. He wrote in his application essay that he believed a service academy could prepare him fully for life as an engaged American and professional.
“I hope to be a part of my country’s future by developing my mind and character, enabling me to reach my potential as a leader and citizen,” he wrote.
To gain acceptance to the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, applicants must receive a nomination from an authorized person such as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives or the U.S. Senate. Applicants must be between 17 and 22 years old, single with no children, and a United States citizen. Appointments to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition.
The U.S. service academies are among the most competitive and distinguished undergraduate universities in the country. They provide students with a full four-year scholarship and a career as a commissioned officer in the U.S. armed services upon graduation. Appointments are highly competitive, with the academies selecting candidates based on evidence of character, scholarship, leadership ability, physical aptitude, medical fitness, goals and motivation.
