David Schweikert

Arizona's 5th District

Biography

David Schweikert has been a lifelong Arizona advocate. He was raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, and attended Arizona State University where he earned a BA degree in finance and real estate and his MBA in 2005.

David is serving his first term in the United States House of Representatives representing Arizona’s 5th district. He is a member of the Whip team and serves on the Financial Services Committee.

Prior to being elected to the 112th Congress, David served as Treasurer of Maricopa County in 2004. As Treasurer of one of the largest counties in the United States, David was responsible for protecting billions of taxpayer dollars and earning over $300 million in investment income while never showing a deficit despite a tough economic environment.

While serving as Treasurer, David created and executed programs to assist Arizona homeowners. He worked to make the tax system easier to use and understand as well as assisting low income, elderly residents. He also dramatically reduced mortgage delinquencies by personally contacting hundreds of homeowners who were unaware of deed issues affecting them.

David first became a public servant in 1991, when he was elected to serve in the Arizona State House representing his hometown, Scottsdale and Fountain Hills. There, he sponsored one of the largest tax cuts in Arizona history, fought pork barrel spending, reduced the size of Arizona government, and passed tough ethics reforms. He led landmark Second Amendment and school choice legislation and gained recognition as an advocate for taxpayers and reforming the legislative process. Due to David’s strong leadership in these areas, his colleagues elected him to a leadership position where he ushered in two of the shortest and most successful legislative sessions in Arizona history.

David was heralded by The Arizona Republic for his work serving Arizonans in both the state legislature and as Treasurer. David is an advocate for taxpayers, a legislative reformer, and a small business owner who understands fiscal responsibility.

David and his wife Joyce reside in Fountain Hills with their famous Wheaten Terrier, Charlie, and two cats. Together they run a real estate business. Joyce also serves as administrator of a surgical center in downtown Scottsdale. They attend Saint Maria Goretti Catholic Church. David has traveled extensively throughout India, East Asia and Eastern Europe and enjoys hiking the mountains of Arizona.
