Pelosi Announces $6 Million Promise Neighborhoods Grant for the Mission

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the Department of Education awarded a $6 million Promise Neighborhood implementation grant to San Francisco’s Mission District and Mission Economic Development Agency as part of a five-year grant. In July, Leader Pelosi wrote Education Secretary Arnie Duncan supporting the grant application. Mission Promise Neighborhood received a $500,000 planning grant from Promise Neighborhoods in 2011.

“Nothing brings more revenue to the Treasury than an investment in our children’s education, and today’s $6 million investment in community-based solutions for low-income and at-risk children in the Mission will reap huge dividends for the lives of these children, our city and the nation.

“By delivering support holistically in a linguistically- and culturally-competent manner, this grant will bridge together successful local nonprofits and private partners to work with kids and families: empowering the community, breaking cycles of poverty, and ensuring every child can reach their full potential – from cradle to college to career.

“There is no greater investment than our children.  Today’s grant victory reinforces the promise of the American Dream for San Francisco’s diverse and vibrant Mission neighborhood and Latino community.”
