Kline Statement on DC Scholarship Program

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. John Kline (R-MN), the U.S. House Education and Labor Committee’s senior Republican member, issued the following statement regarding the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation assuming leadership of the popular DC Opportunity Scholarship Program:

“I congratulate and thank the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation for taking the reins of the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program at this critical time. This program has provided an educational lifeline to thousands of needy children who rely on these scholarships and the strong leadership required to keep the program alive and thriving.

“The Trust has demonstrated success in working with children and families in the nation’s capital and is committed to ensuring the continued success of the DC OSP. Thanks to the Department of Education’s decision to name a new administrator, I’m confident these scholarships will continue making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged students now and into the future.

“Installing strong leadership is an important first step. However, I will not rest until my colleagues join me in reauthorizing and restoring the resources for this program so it can expand its reach to additional students and families, including the 216 children who were promised a scholarship last year, only to have it taken away by those who fear the power of true educational choice and opportunity.”
