Landrieu Announces $8.8M Grant to Increase Elevation of Structures in St. Bernard, St. Tammany and Terrebonne Parishes
WASHINGTON—Today, U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., Chair of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, announced $8.8 million in hazard mitigation grants for St. Bernard, St. Tammany and Terrebonne parishes to increase elevation of 72 total structures in order to reduce the impact of future flooding to homeowners. The funding, provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is part of the hazard mitigation grant program set aside in the Stafford Act. In 2013, Sen. Landrieu first passed reforms to the Robert T. Stafford Act to provide robust funding for communities in the wake of a disaster. “Today's grants will provide St. Bernard, St. Tammany and Terrebonne parishes the resources to help homeowners and businesses build smarter and stronger,” said Sen. Landrieu. "They will be more resilient to storms, preventing property damage, protecting lives, while saving tax payers money. I am happy to see that FEMA has recognized the need for preventative measures like raising homes so that residents in these three parishes do not have to worry about flooding." Today’s grants include:
These hazard mitigation grants, authorized by Section 404 of Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, provide assistance to state and local entities with hazard mitigation measures that would substantially reduce the risk of future damage, hardship, loss, or suffering in any area affected by a major disaster, like hurricanes.
