One of my top priorities is to ensure that the government creates an economic-friendly environment that will spur growth and help rebuild the economy of Western North Carolina and the nation. In order to do so, Congress must prioritize legislation that encourages job creation by keeping taxes low, paying down our national debt, controlling spending and eliminating waste, fraud and abuse within our government. Economic growth originates from the hard-working entrepreneurial spirit of the American people, not from Washington. The best thing we can do to reignite job growth in this country is to get the federal government out of the way of the American worker and ensure that the United States remains a top global economic competitor.
In the 113th Congress, I will work hard to pass legislation focusing on empowering small business owners, reforming the tax code, paying down our national debt, fostering domestic energy production and removing burdensome regulations and mandates associated with intrusive government programs.

U.S. Rep. Mark Meadows is asking Congress to exempt student workers from part of President Obama's Affordable Care Act to save universities money.
Meadows, R-Glenville, said Western Carolina University Chancellor David Belcher pitched the idea and UNC System President Tom Ross is backing it.
Washington, DC— On Wednesday, Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) introduced the Student Worker Exemption Act, which would exempt student workers from the costly Employer Mandate under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Under the ACA—commonly referred to as Obamacare— colleges and universities will soon be required to provide health insurance for student employees who work more than 30 hours a week for 3 months or more, including summer breaks. Due to this new requirement, many schools will be forced to cut student jobs.

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC) introduced legislation Friday which would prohibit the federal government from automatically deducting monthly union dues from federal employees’ paychecks, keeping the collection of union dues between the employee and the union.
When bans on automatic paycheck deductions are implemented, there is often a dramatic decrease in the amount of dues collected, which suggests many employees would prefer to spend their money another way.
Lawmakers told officials from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on Tuesday that the current fraud appeals policy treats healthcare providers as "guilty until proven innocent," and may be driving some of them out of business.
According to the Office of Medicare Hearings and Appeals, appealed fraud cases have skyrocketed between 2012 and 2013, and could reach a million cases by the end of the fiscal year, with many stalled in the system.
