Congressman Mullin’s Response to the President’s ISIS Address

Sep 11, 2014
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Congressman Markwayne Mullin (OK-02) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s address to the nation on his plan to deal with the growing threat of the terrorist group named the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

“The terrorist group ISIS stands as a threat not only to the Middle East but also to western countries, including the United States.  As scene from the brutal murders of our American journalists, there is no question about their determination to destroy our nation and all for which we stand.  A threat such as this will require a united front from our entire country, which means cooperation between the President and Congress.

While the President said he intends to work with Congress, we will also need decisive leadership for those words to be fulfilled.  Further, we cannot rush to commit support, equipment or troops to any conflict without clear strategic objectives. Any decision to supply groups with military arms must be carefully evaluated for threat of U.S. weapons ending up in the wrong hands.  As we move forward in developing a cooperative plan to destroy ISIS, my questions and concerns will center on these important points.

I now call on the President to work with Congress as he’s committed to do.  The threat of ISIS is real, and we cannot waiver or falter in our mission to protect our country.
