With Tax Day quickly approaching, Senator Carper would like to highlight a few tax credits and services that Delawareans may take advantage of when filing their tax returns between now and April 18, 2011.

Free IRS Tax Preparation and E-Filing Service:

Since its inception in 2003, IRS Free File has offered low-to-moderate income taxpayers free access to leading commercial tax preparation software. This year, every taxpayer with a 2010 Adjusted Gross Income of $58,000 or less may visit www.irs.gov/efile to prepare, complete and electronically file their federal tax returns at no cost.

Health Care Tax Credit for Small Businesses:

To make health insurance more affordable for small businesses, the Affordable Care Act includes a tax credit for small businesses that offer health insurance coverage to their workers. Starting in 2010, small businesses with fewer than 25 employees and average annual wages below $50,000 may qualify for a tax credit of up to 35 percent of their health insurance expenses. Non-profit organizations may qualify for a tax credit of up to 25 percent of their health insurance expenses.

Higher Education Tax Credit for Students:

The American Opportunity Tax Credit is a refundable tax credit for undergraduate college education expenses. The credit provides up to $2,500 in tax credits on the first $4,000 of qualifying educational expenses, including tuition and course materials, for all four years of undergraduate college education.
