Education
As the first in my family to graduate college, I understand the opportunities that a quality education can help people access. And as a father of three, I believe that teachers, schools, and administrators must have access to the resources they need to ensure student success. That is why my work on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce is so critical.
One immediate way we can improve education in Clark County is by giving control over education policies back to Clark County parents, teachers, and administrators. The Committee recognizes the importance of local control and believes education policy decisions should be made by the people who interact with students on a daily basis and actually working in our classrooms. Our bill, the Student Success Act, restores local control and reduces the federal footprint in the nation’s classrooms. As part of my on-going efforts to get Nevadans back to work and improve national workforce development and job training programs, I recently supported House passage of H.R. 803, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which will strengthen the nation's workforce development system and job training programs. The bill includes a provision I first introduced in 2011 as part of the Local JOBS Act (112th Congress, H.R. 3611). That provision streamlined local workforce investment boards and strengthened the role of local employers on the boards. The emphasis on input from local employers will ensure that local economic conditions are taken into account when making workforce investment decisions and that the unemployed and underemployed are learning in-demand skills that local employers are looking for in job candidates.
