Veterans
As an active member of the Army Reserve for more than 20 years, I have a deep admiration and appreciation for my fellow servicemen and women, and their families. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, I am fully committed to improving the welfare and quality of life for both our veterans and the current members of our Armed Services.
Whether it is meeting with my veterans advisory panel and speaking with local veterans groups or working on legislation in Washington, being a strong advocate for veterans is something I take very seriously. I have worked on preventing homelessness among our veterans and also reducing instances of sexual assault in the military.
Recently, the Veterans Administration has been under intense scrutiny regarding facility management issues like long wait times for appointments, secret waiting lists, and the mistreatment of veterans seeking medical care. I am working locally with both VA officials and veterans to find solutions to the problems plaguing the Veterans Adminstration. I recently held a listening session with local veterans to hear their stories about southern Nevada VA facility management and have supported legislation in Washington to bring increased accountability to the VA. To learn what else I am doing to ensure our veterans get the treatment and care they have earned and deserve, take a few moments to watch the short video below.
In addition, I have had legislation signed into law that would protect the sanctity of military decorations and medals by making it a crime to knowingly benefit from lying about receiving certain honors. The Stolen Valor Act was a major priority for me because the valorous awards the bill protects were earned for doing extraordinary things under extraordinary circumstances in defense of our country. These awards can and should be protected from fraudulent behavior by law.
