Rep. Waxman Invites FAA to Participate in Forum to Discuss the Future of Santa Monica Airport

Today, Rep. Henry A. Waxman sent a letter to Federal Aviation Association (FAA) Administrator Michael Huerta asking that the FAA participate in a forum in Santa Monica with local residents and the City of Santa Monica to discuss options for the future of the Santa Monica Airport (SMO). The airport is currently operating under the Santa Monica Airport Agreement, a settlement agreement with the FAA that was established in 1984. The agreement will expire in 2015.

Rep. Waxman and Sen. Whitehouse Urge State Department to Analyze How Keystone XL Will Affect Climate Change

Today, Representative Henry A. Waxman and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse sent a letter to Kerri-Ann Jones, Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans, Environment, and Science at the State Department, urging the Department to correct significant mistakes in the analysis of the climate impacts of the Keystone XL pipeline. Rep. Waxman and Sen. Whitehouse write that the draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement underestimates the costs of transporting the tar sands by rail and ignores the views of multiple market experts. They ask the State Department to develop the information needed to provide a “thorough, unbiased, and comprehensive” analysis of the pipeline's impact on the climate.

New Report Reveals Climate Disconnect

Today Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman released a new report that compares the climate change voting records of members of Congress in the 112th Congress with the temperatures experienced in 2012 in the districts they currently represent. It finds a widespread “climate disconnect” in the voting records of the Republican members representing the districts most affected by the soaring temperatures in 2012.

Rep. Waxman Calls on Congress to Prevent Doubling of Student Loan Rates on July 1st

With fewer than four days before interest rates double for need-based Stafford student loans, Rep. Henry A. Waxman voted Wednesday to immediately bring up a bill that would freeze the current low rate of 3.4% for the next two years. House Republicans successfully blocked the effort to consider the bill by a vote of 228 – 194.
