Statement on the Release of American Ebola Patients

Today, Congressmember Karen Bass (D-Calif.) released the following statement:

“I join people from around the world in joy and gratitude over the announcement today that Nancy Writebol and Dr. Kent Brantly have been cured of the Ebola virus and released from Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital. Their recovery is a great testament to the necessity of quality healthcare and the importance of proper medical treatment for people suffering from Ebola. It also highlights why investment in medical and drug research is critical in fighting infectious diseases around the world.”

“Although we are relieved about the recovery of these two Americans, we cannot forget the more than 2,000 people in West Africa who have been infected with Ebola since this outbreak began in March. The U.S. government must do all we can to support Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria as they fight this terrible disease. Even after this outbreak is over, we should remain committed to helping nations develop and strengthen their health care systems so that they can prevent future health epidemics and save countless lives.”
