Service Academy Nominations

 

Each year, Congresswoman Lowey nominates young men and women from the 17th Congressional District for appointment to the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force, and Merchant Marine Academies. The Coast Guard Academy does not require a Congressional nomination. Service Academies provide outstanding opportunities for those qualified to receive one of the most respected college educational experiences in the nation.  Admission is based on SAT/ACT scores, class rank, physical aptitude scores, extracurricular activities, athletic abilities and medical examinations. Any resident of the 17th District between the ages of 17 and 22 may apply.

 

The Nomination Process

 
Please note: applying to a Service Academy is a two-fold process. Each candidate must apply to the academy of his/her choice in addition to seeking a nomination from a Congressional office. These are separate processes with different timetables and requirements.

Congresswoman Lowey accepts nominations postmarked on or before October 1st from residents of the 17th Congressional District of New York who wish to attend one of the Service Academies beginning July of the following year. In addition, the Congresswoman hosts an information night every September for applicants interested in speaking with representatives from each of the academies. Candidates who have expressed interest in a nomination, as well as high schools throughout the 17^th Congressional District, are notified of the event details.
