Housing
Addressing our housing crisis is a constant focus of mine in Congress. The best thing we can do for the housing market is get more people back to work in good paying jobs. More jobs means more people able to afford monthly payments or save for that first home. However, there are things Congress can do to help families and individuals struggling with housing issues.
I joined a bipartisan coalition of House members in introducing legislation that helps make the American dream of homeownership attainable for those who are saving for their first home. The bill, the Creating Homeownership Opportunity Act, creates a tax-advantaged savings program—similar to a Health Savings Account—for the purpose of building equity in the purchase of a first home. I have also introduced legislation, the Mortgage Forgiveness Tax Relief Act, which would extend for two additional years the relief from taxes on shadow income resulting from mortgage debt forgiveness.
