Cannon Renewal Project Updates
Below is the latest information on current work underway to renew the Cannon House Office Building during the Cannon Renewal Project.
Update: October 2014
In preparation for the renewal of the Cannon House Office Building (CHOB), a portion of sidewalk and parking lane on New Jersey Avenue SE and C Street SE will be closed to accommodate construction deliveries, staging and building access. The sidewalk and parking closure will occur on November 3, 2014.
Roadwork improvements and a pedestrian crosswalk will be installed on New Jersey Avenue prior to the sidewalk and parking lane closure. This work will occur on Saturday, November 1, 2014 and only require the closure of the New Jersey/Independence vehicle entrance and associated drive lanes on New Jersey Avenue between Independence Avenue and C Street on that date. During this street closure, the USCP will open the South Capitol/Independence Avenue vehicle entrance for vehicular traffic into the House campus.
A wood construction fence will separate the construction area from pedestrians and vehicles. The active pedestrian building entrances will not be impacted by construction fencing. Two way traffic will remain on both New Jersey and C Street with limited disruptions during the installation of the fence enclosure. Signage will be posted to inform pedestrians of detours associated with the closing of sidewalks, including access to the existing handicap accessible entrance. This closure will remain in effect until the midpoint of Phase 2 construction in 2020.
September 2014
Beginning September 15, 2014, and remaining for the project duration, a portion of Lot 1 lot immediately south of the Cannon Building will be closed (see map below). The Lot 1 site will house the contractor's construction offices and equipment.
