2004-2010; elected as a Republican to the United States Senate in a special election on January 19, 2010, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Edward M. Kennedy, a seat subsequently held by appointed senator Paul G. Kirk, took
the oath of office on February 4, 2010, and served from February 4, 2010, to
January 3, 2013; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 2012.
