Press Release

Washington, D.C. (August 26, 2016)— Today, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD) issued the following statement on Women’s Equality Day, which celebrates the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote:

“96 years ago today America took a step toward becoming a more fair society by ratifying the 19th Amendment.  As we celebrate the progress we made on that day and in the years since, let us continue working to close the wage gap, guaranteeing paid family leave and expanding affordable child care, and respecting a woman’s right to choose.  Congress needs to empower all women to fully participate in our economy, pursue their dreams and reach their full potential, because when women succeed, America succeeds.”
