    In an effort to raise awareness about new initiatives to prevent childhood lead poisoning, U.S. Senator Jack Reed welcomed U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julián Castro to Providence to meet with state and local leaders, public health experts, housing officials, and environmental advocates to discuss new initiatives to better protect children and reduce the threat of lead exposure in Rhode Island and nationwide. They also toured homes where federal lead abatement funds have been put to work cleaning up lead pain and other hazards that harm children’s health.

    Senator Reed Helps Break Ground on New Citizens Bank Campus in Johnston

    Sentor Reed joined the rest of the Rhode Island delegration, state leaders, and officials from Citizens Bank at the groundbreaking for Citizen Financial Group's new 420,000-square foot campus in Johnston. The campus will house 3,200 workers of the state’s 5000 total workers, collaborative work spaces for them, and dining and fitness facilities.  It is expected to be completed by July 2018.

    In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service (NPS), Senator Jack Reed joined members of the NPS’s Junior Ranger program in presenting the NPS with a birthday cake at Roger Williams National Memorial in Providence.   Senator Reed was accompanied by several children who were participating in the Junior Ranger program to celebrate the 100th birthday of NPS, whose mission is to preserve America's parks and historic sites around the country. National Park Rangers provided the attendees with brochures and additional information about the nation’s national parks, and also presented nature-related awards and centennial celebration items.

    Senator Reed wrote the 2015 law which established the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park and included $927,000 in federal funding to help advance the park in this year in the Omnibus Appropriations bill.

    Reed Welcomes Defense Industry Leaders to Newport for Defense Innovation Days Event

    Senator Reed delivered the keynote address at the 2016 Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance (SENEDIA) Defense Innovation Days event, a gathering in Newport between companies in the defense industry and policymakers to discuss the future of innovation and technology in the defense industry and its impact on the New England economy.  300 attendees are expected at the three-day event, with 25 companies showcasing their recent innovations.  As the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Reed helped include a number of Rhode Island-focused priorities in the Senate-passed FY2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), including $5 billion for the Virginia-class submarine program, $1.5 billion to fully support the Ohio-class Replacement Program, $136.3 million to accelerate undersea warfare applied research, and $20 million for the construction of a new headquarters facility for the Rhode Island Army and Air National Guard.

    Reed Helps Break Ground on ChurchWoods Housing Development

    Senator Reed joined the rest of the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation at the ground breaking ceremony for the ChurchWoods property in Charlestown, which will feature a 24-unit affordable housing development for Rhode Island seniors. Washington County Community Development Corporation (WCCDC) purchased the ChurchWoods property from the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island on June 30, 2015. ChurchWoods is a partnership between WCCDC and the Blackstone Valley Development Corporation (BVDC) the real estate development arm of The ARC of Blackstone Valley. Pezzuco Construction was awarded the construction contract on July 21, 2016.

    Senator Reed joined the Rhode Island Health Center Association's celebration of National Health Center Week at the Providence Community Health Center. Also in attendence were Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Representatives David Cicilline and Jim Langevin, and representatives from the Rhode Island Health Center Association and various Health Centers across the state.
