Washington, D.C.—Congressman Tim Walberg (MI-07) voted today for the Survivors’ Bill of Rights Act, bipartisan legislation to provide protections and access to a legal process for survivors of sexual assault. H.R. 5578 ensures that sexual assault survivors in federal criminal cases have a right to a sexual assault evidence collection kit, are notified in writing before the kit is destroyed, the ability to request preservation of the kit, and are informed of important results from a forensic examination.

“Survivors of sexual assault have endured unimaginable pain and suffering, and while we can’t undo the trauma, we can provide enhanced protections and make it easier to navigate the legal system. With this bipartisan bill, we’ve put in place a standardized set of procedures that will help sexual assault survivors obtain the justice they deserve,” said Congressman Walberg.

Congressman Walberg serves on the House Education and the Workforce Committee as Chair of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee. In addition, he serves on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. For more information on Walberg’s work in Congress visit walberg.house.gov.
