WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Renee Ellmers (R-NC-02) issued the below release after the House Energy & Commerce Committee passed H.R. 2646 – the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act.

"Today, the Energy & Commerce Committee made significant progress in addressing the broken mental health system that exists in our country.

 

“This groundbreaking legislation that I co-sponsored, H.R. 2646 – the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act – is the first of its kind. This legislation implements meaningful mental health reforms and provides long overdue fixes to the current system by focusing resources on psychiatric care for patients and families. Its unanimous passage out of the Energy & Commerce Committee this morning is a testament to how paramount this legislation is in addressing the serious mental health crisis facing our nation.

“H.R. 2646 will increase access to care, save money for state and local governments and improve outcomes for patients and their families. This is a huge milestone for all states, including North Carolina. I applaud Chairman Upton and Representative Murphy on their commitment to shepherding this bill through the committee process.”

This morning, the full Energy & Commerce Committee convened to markup a landmark mental health reform bill, H.R. 2646 – the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act. This legislation will reform our broken mental health system by addressing problems with treatment and prevention. Further, it will boost our mental health workforce and will result in better outcomes for patients.
