The city center has been undergoing a revitalization for the past decade, with new housing attracting the traditional urban base as well as empty-nesters. The overall Louisville Metro population of about 700,000 is growing more diverse, with a recent influx of Latinos, Asians, and eastern Europeans during the past 20 years.

Louisville may be best known as the hometown of Muhammad Ali and Churchill Downs, where the Kentucky Derby has taken place on the first Saturday in May since 1875.
