Congressman Don Manzullo (R-Egan) will have new avenues to help bolster job creation in northern Illinois and strengthen manufacturing in America in 2011 through his appointment as the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific.

Lead Republican on the Asia subcommittee the last 4 years under Democratic control, Manzullo is excited to chair the subcommittee with jurisdiction over one of the most important economic, geopolitical, and emerging regions of the world. It is a region of contradictions that offers the United States tremendous export opportunity while posing serious national security threats. The Asia-Pacific region accounts for more than 40 percent of world population, over 50 percent of world trade, and 60 percent of the world’s gross domestic product.

“I want to thank our incoming Foreign Affairs Chairman, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, for appointing me to chair the critical Asia-Pacific subcommittee that will help implement our nation’s trade and political agenda in this key region of the world,” Manzullo said. “This appointment will complement my prior service on the subcommittee as well as my efforts to level the playing field for U.S. manufacturers competing in the global marketplace so they can grow and put Americans back to work.”

“Congressman Manzullo’s strong support for our ally, South Korea, in wake of North Korea’s string of unprovoked aggression is just the latest example of the strong leadership he has provided for our Committee on U.S. policy toward Asia,” Rep. Ros-Lehtinen said. “He also understands the critical role of our relationship with Japan in providing stability and security in this region, as well as the need to hold China accountable for its economic policies and its assistance to the proliferation efforts of North Korea, Iran, and other rogue regimes. Don is a tremendous asset to our Committee and I am very pleased that he will be chairing the Asia-Pacific subcommittee in the next Congress.”

Manzullo was also re-appointed to the important House Financial Services Committee that will have a direct impact on America’s economic recovery. Specifically, the committee deals with legislation and regulations surrounding the financial markets, insurance companies, banks and credit unions, housing, and Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac.

Manzullo will also continue to co-chair the House Manufacturing Caucus, which he founded in 2003 to bring together Members of Congress who share Manzullo’s mission to strengthen manufacturing in America.

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN-05) issued the following statement after being named to head the House Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Eurasia during the forthcoming 112th Congress:

“I wish to thank Chair-elect Ileana Ros-Lehtinen for entrusting me to spearhead the House of Representatives’ oversight of our relationship with our European and Eurasian allies. Whether the subject is missile defense, religious freedom and human rights in the emerging democracies of the former Soviet Union or United States support for European financial bailouts, I can assure Hoosier taxpayers that I will vigorously question the Obama Administration’s approaches and priorities to ensure that they not only support American values and interests, but that they are fiscally responsible as well.

Background:

Rep. Burton is the third highest ranking Republican Member of the House Foreign Relations Committee. Earlier this morning Chairwoman-elect Ileana Ros-Lehtinen announced Rep. Burton’s Chairmanship with the following: “Congressman Burton is a hard-charger and never afraid to tell it like it is. I have no doubt that he will stand up for American values and stand against those who threaten our interest and who threaten freedom and security worldwide, and he won’t make apologies for who we are as a country and what we stand for. As Chairman of this subcommittee, he will be on the front line of the debate on such issues as missile defense, burden-sharing by our NATO allies, and countering growing Russian aggression against new democracies. I can think of no one better for this effort.”

WASHINGTON, DC—Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-CA) today was named Vice Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee by incoming Chairman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida.

“Congressman Gallegly is a very valued, experienced and effective Member of this Committee and is very familiar with the global challenges facing us today, as well as with leaders around the world who we must work with closely to address those challenges. I greatly look forward to working with him and getting his input on the direction that our Committee should take in the next Congress,” Ros-Lehtinen said.

“I appreciate incoming Chairman Ros-Lehtinen providing me with this opportunity to serve the full committee as Vice Chairman,” Gallegly said. “The United States and our allies face many challenges and it is critical that the House Foreign Affairs Committee lead Congress in meeting those challenges.”

Gallegly is a senior member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and currently Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Europe, which he chaired the last time Republicans were in the majority. He is finishing up his third term on the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and its Terrorism, Human Intelligence, Analysis and Counterintelligence Subcommittee. For years, Rep. Gallegly has been in the forefront of homeland security and the United States’ war against terrorism.

As a senior member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Gallegly has worked with America’s European allies to fight terrorism here and abroad. He has met with more than 50 heads of state, government delegations, or members of foreign legislative bodies here and abroad. He introduced and passed major NATO expansion legislation and represented the House of Representatives at the NATO summit in Prague at the request of President Bush.

In 2008, he was the only member of Congress to fly to Pakistan to meet with the country’s then-President Pervez Musharraf the day after the elections that brought a new Parliament to power. He also flew to Israel to meet with then-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and then-Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss Israeli-Palestinian relations and other Middle Eastern issues, and to tour Sderot, an Israeli town under siege from rockets fired from Hamas-controlled Gaza.

During the 108th Congress, Rep. Gallegly was handpicked by then-Foreign Affairs Chairman Henry Hyde to chair the newly created Subcommittee on International Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Human Rights. As such, Gallegly chaired one of the first hearings on the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations, a hearing that led to eight provisions being included in the final bill.

In January 2004, Gallegly—representing the Foreign Affairs Committee—and former Rep. Curt Weldon representing the Armed Services Committee led a congressional delegation of three other members to Libya to meet with Moammar Gadhafi after the Libyan strongman denounced terrorism and agreed to open his country to international arms inspectors. It was the first American delegation to travel to Tripoli in about 30 years.

Six weeks later, Gallegly chaired a meeting with family members of the victims of Pan Am 103 to discuss their pending settlement against Libya.

Among Gallegly’s other achievements was authorship of legislation that was signed into law to streamline the procedure for keeping terrorist groups on the State Department’s official list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

Washington, Dec 21 -

Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) was named today as Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade. He released the following statement:

"I thank incoming Chairman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) for entrusting me with this important post. I look forward to working with her and all the members of the Committee to fashion policies that strengthen our country," said Royce.

"The Subcommittee faces three daunting challenges: the far-reaching spread of Islamist terrorism and ideology; the proliferation of nuclear weapons and material; and a stalled trade agenda hampering U.S. economic growth. The Subcommittee will delve into all of these issues, seeking to make Americans more prosperous and safe," said Royce.

Upon making the announcement, incoming Chairman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said:

"Congressman Royce is one of the most respected Members on our Committee and is someone the American people can count on in this capacity to help prevent extremists and other outlaws from threatening the U.S. He has been a critical partner in holding North Korea accountable for its nuclear and missile activities, its aggressive posture against U.S. allies, and its money laundering activities that directly undermine U.S. security interests. Ed was relentless in his support for the strongest possible prosecution of Viktor Bout, an arms trader known as the ‘Merchant of Death,’ and I am very pleased to have him again take the reins on the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade subcommittee."

Royce wrotetoday on his blog, Foreign Intrigue, about his new role. Royce uses the blog to communicate with constituents and policy makers on a variety of national security issues.

Royce is a senior Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He has previously served as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Africa and the Subcommittee on International Terrorism and Nonproliferation. Most recently, he has served as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation and Trade.

WASHINGTON – Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14) today was named Chairman of the House Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere for the 112th Congress. Mack currently serves as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee.

The Western Hemisphere Subcommittee oversees matters affecting U.S. foreign policy and political relations in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Mack said:

“I’m truly honored to be named Chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee and to continue my work on addressing the pressing issues facing the region.

“With freedom and free markets under continuous assault by thugocrats like Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and the Castro Brothers in Cuba, the United States must remain committed to countering the influence of these socialist leaders in the region. We must also work with our allies in the hemisphere to eradicate terrorist organizations like the FARC, keep a watchful eye on the dangerous ties between Russia, Iran, and Venezuela, and build relationships based on our shared goals of freedom, security, and prosperity.

“I look forward to working with Chairman Ros-Lehtinen, the other Subcommittee Chairmen, and the entire Committee on improving U.S. foreign policy and preserving freedom around the world.”

Incoming Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said, “Congressman Mack does not hesitate to call a dictator a dictator, or, as is his preferred term, a “thugocrat.” Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Evo Morales, and Rafael Correa are all placing democracy under siege in Latin America, and I am happy to have Connie standing up to their tyrannical advances as Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere.”
