Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today wrote to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ Director Leon Rodriguez to urge him to provide immediate regulatory relief to address the continued H-2B challenges on Guam. Congresswoman Bordallo reiterated her concern that the high rates of H-2B renewal denials are impacting Guam’s workforce and will adversely affect Guam’s construction and health industries, among others, including ongoing and future projects related to the military build-up and associated civilian infrastructure projects.

Bordallo today announced that the Department of Defense has obligated $55.65 million for civilian water and wastewater improvement projects related to the realignment of Marines from Okinawa to Guam. This funding is part of a $106.4 million appropriation that was approved by Congress and was authorized by a provision sponsored by Congresswoman Bordallo in the FY16 NDAA. She has secured a similar provision in this year’s defense bill that authorizes funding for the remaining funds.

Bordallo today issued the following statement regarding the International Tribunal’s decision in the case of The Republic of the Philippines vs. the People’s Republic of China. The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), an international tribunal established under the authority of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to which both China and the Philippines are a party, ruled that China’s “nine-dash line” claims in the South China Sea were invalid.
