U.S. Congressman Walter Jones, North Carolina’s 3rd District representative, has crossed the aisle to file a complaint before the Federal Election Commission seeking to end super PAC – political action committee – spending in US elections. The complaint seeks to reverse a federal appeals court ruling which created super PACs and has resulted in an explosion of spending in elections across the country. Listed on the complaint with Jones, a Republican, are California’s 33rd District Congressman Ted Lieu and Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, both Democrats.

A powerhouse legal team representing a bipartisan group of congressional members and candidates is unleashing a new effort to overturn the case that birthed super PACs, part of a novel strategy to rein in the big money that has poured into campaigns since 2010.

Their immediate target is not Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the polarizing decision handed down by the Supreme Court that year. Instead, they are going after a lesser-known case decided by U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit just two months later: SpeechNow.org v. FEC .

Two California Democratic congressmen on Wednesday urged the California Public Employees Retirement System, the largest U.S. public pension fund, to divest from oil giant ExxonMobil over its handling of the issue of climate change. Congressmen Ted Lieu and Mark DeSaulnier sent a letter to CalPERS CEO Anne Stausboll, saying it is "morally suspect" for the $300 billion pension fund "to invest in a company that engaged in morally reprehensible conduct" on climate change.
