Congressman Mike Quigley

Representing the 5th District of Illinois

Transportation

Transportation and infrastructure has served as the backbone of our economic success for generations. But today, our crumbling infrastructure is slowing economic growth and hurting our ability to create jobs. Now more than ever, it is important to invest in long-term projects seeking to modernize our national infrastructure, provide efficient and safe transportation of goods and people, and reduce congestion and pollution.

As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I have prioritized Chicago-area infrastructure investment from my position on the Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD). I have championed robust funding for our nation’s transportation infrastructure and brought hundreds of millions of federal funding dollars back to my city and state for vital infrastructure projects like the CTA’s Modernization of the Red and Purple Lines and the completion of the McCook and Thornton Reservoirs that will help prevent Chicago flooding. I helped lead the charge to reauthorize transportation infrastructure investments for highways, rail, and mass transit, which for the next six years will provide the funding certainty states, localities, and businesses need to complete critical infrastructure projects. I was also proud to join Congressman Lipinski in introducing the Reassuring Adequate Investment in Lifesaving Systems (RAILS) Act, which reauthorizes the Railroad Safety Technology Grants Program to provide critical funding for train safety technologies, ensuring our railroads operate safely across the country. Additionally, I’ve fought for increased funding to make public transit more accessible and user-friendly to seniors and Americans with disabilities. Transparency and accountability are critical for responsible infrastructure spending. That’s why I launched my “Mike on the Move” initiative in the summer of 2014 to highlight the Chicago region’s transportation needs and emphasize how the federal government can support transportation and infrastructure investments.

Reliable, safe, and affordable transportation options are essential to ensuring the continued prosperity of our nation. And renewing and reinvigorating America’s transportation infrastructure will require forward-thinking investments in our nation’s roads, trails, and rails. As a country, we should be doing everything we can to ensure that we have the necessary infrastructure to support a 21st century economy.

Tourism has grown to be one of the United States’ most important industries, with one in nine U.S. jobs depending on it. Travel employment increased for the tenth month in a row this past April, according to an U.S. Travel Association estimate. And in 2015, domestic and international travelers spent $947 billion in the U.S. and directly supported more than 8.1 million U.S. jobs. Travel is also America’s largest service export, as well as one of our top job generating industries. So, it would stand to reason that Congress should be looking for ways to support this industry and increase international tourism.
