Quigley Introduces Bill to Name Post Office in Honor of Fallen Chicago Police Officer

Jul 7, 2016
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) honored fallen Chicago Police Officer Joseph P. Cali by introducing a bill to rename the United States Post Office at 6300 N. Northwest Highway in Chicago, Illinois as the “Officer Joseph P. Cali Post Office Building.”

“Officer Cali was taken from this world at the young age of 31 for simply protecting his community,” said Rep. Quigley. “He was murdered in cold blood, leaving behind his wife and two young daughters who were forced to grow up with only memories of their dad. I wish we could do more, but hopefully we will see this bill passed through the House and Senate, so that this Post Office can stand in Officer Cali’s name and memorialize the dedication and sacrifice he made for the City of Chicago.”

On May 19, 1975, Officer Cali, a 41st Ward resident, was shot in the head and killed by a sniper while writing a citation on West Lake Street. Officer Cali was only 31 years old when he was killed, and was survived by his wife, Neva, and two young daughters, Jennifer and Carolyn. Officer Cali was a two-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, as well as a Vietnam War Veteran.
