Affordable Care Act

Issues: Health

Thousands of South Carolinians have already benefited from the health law. And starting October 1st, the health law will help many more. Click here to see some of the benefits.

The new health insurance exchange, called Marketplace, goes into effect on January 1, 2014.

Through the Marketplace, you will be able to choose a health plan that gives you the right balance of cost and coverage.

Open enrollment begins October 1, 2013 and runs through March 31, 2014. You must have proof of insurance when filing your 2014 tax return unless you have a valid exemption. If you would qualify under the new income limits for Medicaid, you are exempt because the State of South Carolina has chosen not to expand Medicaid eligibility. For other exemptions, please visit www.HealthCare.gov and enter the search word "exemptions."

To get more information about purchasing health insurance through the Marketplace visit, www.HealthCare.gov or call toll-free 1-800-318-2596.

South Carolina community health centers have received more than $2 million to hire additional staff to help the uninsured and underinsured register for health insurance on the exchange. Click here to find the community health center nearest you.
