Water samples from facilities managed by the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) are tested for lead. Over the course of the last 11 years, the AOC has taken nearly 400 samples from primary devices — including drinking fountains — and about 220 samples from secondary sources — such as sinks — in the Cannon House Office Building with no concern for water quality.

On the afternoon of Monday, June 27, 2016, the AOC began receiving anomalous test results. Our top priority is the safety and health of the congressional community. In response, the AOC made the decision to shut down the drinking water to the Cannon House Office Building, provide bottled water for consumption, offer blood lead level testing for congressional staff, and accelerate lead in water testing for other AOC-managed buildings.

The AOC has engaged with health and safety experts to conduct additional, comprehensive water testing in the Cannon House Office Building in light of the anomalous results.  Careful analysis of the water testing data, identification of the source of the lead, and making appropriate corrections will take time.  It is important to proceed deliberately and carefully to fully investigate and resolve this issue. The AOC appreciates your patience as our office ensures the quality and safety of the drinking water in the Cannon House Office Building.
