WHAT IS EXIDE?
Exide Technologies operated a battery recycling plant in Vernon, California that had contaminated surrounding communities with pollutants like lead. Consuming or breathing certain levels of lead can be a health risk. You can obtain a free blood-lead screening through the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and have your soil tested and cleaned up at no cost through the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC).
WHY IS LEAD HARMFUL?
Lead can affect almost every organ and system in your body. Children six years old and younger are most susceptible to the effects of lead. In children, even low levels of lead in the blood can result in: behavior and learning problems, lower IQ and hyperactivity, slowed growth, hearing problems, and anemia.
HOW TO GET YOUR BLOOD TESTED
Adults and children living, working or going to school within 3 miles of the Exide plant are encouraged to get a free blood lead test. The only way to know if you have lead poisoning is with a blood lead test. To sign up for a free confidential blood lead screening, please call (844) 888-2290. You may also visit bloodleadtesting.com for more information.
HOW TO GET YOUR HOME TESTED AND CLEANED

You can call California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) at (844) 225-3887 to find out, or visit their website at www.dtsc.ca.gov/exide to view a map. Only properties within this 1.7 mile area are eligible for soil testing at this time.
